Affiliate marketing is considered an easy way for affiliates and merchants to make money online automatically. However, not everyone who enters into the affiliate marketing business will achieve the success they desire. Whether you’re a potential affiliate or a merchant, it’s important that you first understand some of the more common affiliate marketing mistakes and how to avoid them.

Here are some of the common mistakes:

Affiliate Marketing Mistake 1: Expecting a visitor to click on an affiliate link.

Visitors must feel compelled to click. Today’s potential customers are all keenly away that they are being marketed to. This makes the job of any advertiser, not the least of which the affiliate marketer, an uphill climb. Web browsers encounter pop-ups, pop-unders, banner ads, sidebar ads and sponsored results. What’s more, almost everything on a website these days seems to be a hyperlink - even telephone numbers have become “live” thanks to smart phones.

The modern-day website has become a virtual mine-field, leading present-day customers reluctant to hover their mouse over a link, much less click on one unless they’re convinced it will lead them to a desirable outcome. Taking all of this into consideration, it’s important to take a step back from your goal and first target your customer’s motivation. Once you’ve determined the why, then determine how you’ll convince them to click on your link, from graphics to enticing copy. The more heavy lifting you do for the merchant, the more likely you’ll be to see commissions.

Affiliate Marketing Mistake 2: Expecting a customer to buy a lousy product. Merchants and affiliate marketing websites both know if the product they are selling is unsellable. Also, be wary of a higher placement in an affiliate network for a less desirable product over lower placement for a highly desirable product.

Affiliate Marketing Mistake 3: Not keeping up with the Joneses. Best marketing practices are a moving target. Customers are evolving and so should our attempts be to attract them.

Affiliate Marketing Mistake 4: Assuming the money will come pouring in immediately. Long-term success requires hard work and sacrifice. If you are not prepared to do your part, it’s best not to take the plunge at all.
