A Health And Physical Education Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Important Issues Involved In Alcohol Addiction Signs

Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most popular private high school in the state. Although she had been teaching for only one year, she had already established a reputation as an educator with teaching approaches that motivated and encouraged her pupils to think and to learn.

For instance, one Wednesday morning she addressed her students and articulated the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a general standpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the most common signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely prove that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent person, but the more signs that a person exhibits, the more likely it is that he or she is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."

Miss Jackson then explained to the class that each student would be responsible for examining two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the class via a nine minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to study the list and rank the top six alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After approximately five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the students in her class that after she tallies the results, she will present her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told her students to look over the data on the piece of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 30 or 40 seconds, almost every student in the class raised his or her hand. It was clear to see that the students had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism authorities. For example, almost every pupil disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, namely, "Do you feel awfully ill when you stop drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the pupils in her class why this answer was the most straightforward sign of alcohol addiction. She emphasized the fact that the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.

Fundamentally this means that when an alcohol dependent person suddenly quits drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to grasp the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and encouraged the students in her class to stop and think about a vital health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
