A Young Gentleman Requires Counseling For His Intense Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcoholism And Drug Addiction

Nearly eight months ago I had dinner with a forty-five-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from intense depression, has relationship issues, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As articulated by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship difficulties.

As explained by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical conditions that he basically has no driving force to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete two semesters of grad school in entrepreneurship.

Benjamin's condition makes me wonder if he is an example of an individual who can look within and see his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something constructive about these issues. Or, conversely, if he is an individual who has to hit the very bottom before he gets drug and alcohol treatment that results in long lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how therapy would help his chemical dependency. For starters, there are a number of newly developed doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin avoid a drug and an alcohol drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to understand the fact that there is absolutely nothing productive about substance abuse and abusive and hazardous drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the road to deteriorating health, a premature death, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, poor work and school performance, and legal problems. Fourth, treatment for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him manage these psychological problems more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Due to the fact that Benjamin lacks the willpower to carry out much of anything in his life, it is evident that he desperately needs a little hope for a more productive existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the therapy he needs for his severe depression and dependency and continue with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be crushed in life. He doesn't comprehend this right now but if he can learn how to refrin from alcohol and drugs via drug and alcohol therapy and get the counseling he requires for his acute depression, he can redirect his life and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

Enhanced relationships, constructive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to obtain the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a healthy and sober manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his existence.
