Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? More than a few alcohol abuse specialists articulate that alcohol ads produced by the media are a major reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcoholism consultants believe that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of liquor, beer, and wine in our society. Still other alcohol abuse specialists assert that numerous teenagers engage in dangerous drinking because of the increased stress that they face.
From a somewhat different point of view, due to the fact that both parents in a number of families are gainfully employed, the lack of parental supervision evidently has to play a major part in the proliferation of teenage alcohol abuse. And last of all, different alcoholism experts assert that the escalation of teen alcohol abuse is due, in part, to our lax society.
One aspect of youth alcohol abuse that appears to be poorly reported in the alcohol abuse research literature, alternatively, is the nonexistence of educational programs that teach teens how to enhance their coping skills so that their excessive and careless drinking behavior is drastically decreased or eliminated. Stated differently, scientific research has shown that there is an indirect relationship between poor coping skills and hazardous and excessive drinking.
Essentially, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the higher the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a correct claim, why isn't coping skills training a primary part of the educational curriculum in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?
Let us create a scenario for explanatory purposes. Let us imagine a society in which students are trained how to achieve good coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets difficult, students who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a healthier and more successful manner, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into action.
Stated another way, students who exhibit high-quality coping skills will be more able to think proactively and show signs of first-class decision making as opposed to teenagers who, because they lack good coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of unhealthy drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, furthermore, if teenagers not only received exceptional coping skills training but also got a first-rate education that focused on the long term and short term harmful consequences associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills training, it is declared, would help students avoid the obvious charm interlinked with underage drinking and, accordingly, would significantly diminish the hazardous drinking behavior shown by teenagers in our country.
There are surely various legitimate reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a risky manner. Such a complex predicament demands an all-inclusive and more pertinent response by our educators, politicians, parents, and students so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more productive and responsible manner rather than gravitating to abusive and excessive drinking to solve their problems.
