Entertainment units or entertainment centers, as they are more often called, are the furniture that usually house a family's television, cable box, satellite box, DVD player, audio system, surround sound, VCR, stereo, gaming console and any other variety of recreation type equipment.

The collection entertainment console probably originated in back when televisions were large and bulky and were a piece of furniture themselves! The stands they were housed in were commonly manufactured from faux wood to furnish the family's home. As televisions became compact, they did not need to be housed in a cabinet any longer, but people still needed something to put their televisions on in order that they would be at eye level for easy viewing.

These cabinets became larger and larger until people began putting all their entertainment devices on it, and thus the entertainment center was born. Nowadays flat screens can be installed on walls, but as very few televisions can run alone, that is without cable or satellite, wall units and entertainment centers are usually bought together.

Why people still purchase entertainment centers is because although they do not need something to place their TV on any more, they still need something to put their cable boxes, satellite boxes, DVD players, audio system and gaming consoles on. It is through this need that entertainment centers continue to be manufactured and bought. Reality is the reason.

It is much more practical to put our equipment on a piece of furniture than it is to put them somewhere else, like on shelves, or on the floor. Possibilities are, you have one, your neighbor has one and the whole family has them. They are a facet of life, and they will not be going away anytime soon.
