The importance of proper cardiovascular shoes is often under-rated. Folks discuss doing the exercises right, planning out a routine, eating right, hydrating properly, and all kinds of other work-out recommendations, but they hardly ever get to talk about good fitness center shoes. But ask any fitness trainer and they will inform you how important it is. Of course, if you're taking an aerobics class, then footwear doesn't matter. You will do all of your aerobic exercise on a padded mat, and wearing shoes is going to be discouraged, if not outright banned from the class in order to preserve the floor. But for many other cardio exercises (with swimming and a few other excepted) proper cardio shoes are a must. And as a fitness trainer will tell you, you just can't safeguard your feet without them.
The form of aerobic shoes depends on what you are doing for your work-out. If you are a serious runner, you require sneakers. These are lighter than other kinds of cardio shoes, and concentrate padding for where runners need it. They are no good for playing tennis, for example, as they provide virtually no lateral ankle support. For tennis, or lots of other exercises that include more than just moving in a straight line, you require a different sort of aerobic shoes: cross trainers or running shoes. Basically, both of these cardiovascular shoes are about the same thing - the contemporary version of the sports club shoe, with a whole lot of padding, yet still a low top to permit some flexibility and movement at the ankle.
Of course, if you play basketball, you need bigger sturdier cardio shoe to adequately protect your ankle. These are called high tops, and they run up all the way to the top of the ankle. They are great for this sport, because you are continually jumping high, bursting into abrupt sprints in different directions, and doing many other things that can easily injure your ankle. They protect you from injuries more effectively than any other sort of cardiovascular shoes, and you will see nearly all basketball players wearing them. They are not good for the versions of sprints that you've in tennis, however, and so are rarely if ever worn by tennis players. Then again, if you are a cross country runner, you need different aerobic shoes entirely. They will be kind of a combination between running shoes and light hiking boots, with a somewhat light build and a whole lot of traction on the bottom. If you go for a career in personal training this is just one of the aspects of fitness you must know all about - but that is another story completely.
