When I was just a little boy I can tenderly remember sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and watching my father receiving a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is in our day. There was an knack to it. The barber really cared about what he was doing and it was apparent that my father enjoyed it. Nearly all men kept their hair short as that was the style back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we think of today, with foam from a can and a molded disposable razor. Instead, the lather was put on with a brush and a straight blade razor was chosen. It looks terrifying, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever obtain. After the shave was the hot towel that every time felt so good.

The men would principally talk about football or local politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a bit better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you often attempt to get out as soon as possible.

As I walk by the local barber shop and make out the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I question why this practice has mostly vanished from our culture. Do people not value a decent hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an some time being friendly with our friends and neighbors seems like a job? While I am not one to be angry and only yearn for for "how things were", I do desire that people will recall and respect the way it was just a few years ago.
